How to make exceptions for Do Not Disturb mode on your iPhone

Whether you're watching a movie or in a meeting, sometimes you just don't want to be disturbed. Thankfully, there's a Do Not Disturb mode on your phone, which keeps calls and notifications silent. Do you still want to receive certain incoming calls and messages, for example from your partner or your child? Then you have to set an exception on your smartphone. That is how it works.

The Do Not Disturb mode can be found in the control panel with the icon with a crescent moon on it.

With the arrival of iOS 12, it has become a lot easier to make exceptions to this Do Not Disturb mode for an entire group. Go to the Settings on your iPhone and click Do not disturb. Put the button behind Do not disturb at. In the same menu you will find Allow calls from. Here you have the choice between Everybody, No one and Favorites. You can also create exceptions for an existing group. You can create these types of groups via iCloud on your Mac.

If you have a contact who is allowed to disturb you, but is not in your favorites list, you can still make an exception by applying Do Not Disturb mode to that one contact.

You do this by going to your contacts and typing in the name of the person who is allowed to disturb you. Click on his or her name and press at the top right Change. There you will find the cup ringtone. Click on it and then toggle the option Always on for emergencies in. Do you want to continue to receive text messages from this person in addition to phone calls? Then go back one step and click SMS tone, where you again Always on for emergencies can turn on. This way you will always receive calls and messages from individual contacts, even if you have not marked them as favourites.
