How to backup WhatsApp on your Android device

If you have to reset your Android phone or if you have a new device, it is annoying if you immediately lose all your WhatsApp messages. Fortunately, it is possible to make a WhatsApp backup with your Android phone and then restore it. Here we show you how to do this.

If you want to keep using the same phone but have had to wipe it first for some reason, reinstalling WhatsApp will allow you to restore your conversation history right away because the chat app automatically creates a backup every day that is in a separate folder, whatsapp called, is stored on your device. However, if you want to use WhatsApp on a new Android phone, you will have to restore your WhatsApp messages from a separate backup. To back up WhatsApp, you can choose from two options: a local backup or a backup via Google Drive.

Note: The tips below will only work if you continue to use the same phone number, because your call history is linked to your number.

Using Google Drive

If you already use Google Drive, this is the easiest way to backup WhatsApp.

Go to Settings > Chats and choose Chat backup. Create a backup here so that the most recent messages are included immediately. Choose Backup to Google Drive and indicate to which Google Drive account you want to upload the backup.

Local backup

If you don't use Google Drive, or if you prefer not to store your WhatsApp messages on a cloud service, you can create a local backup.

You can save this backup on the micro SD card in your Android phone. You can do this in Settings > Call Settings > Backup. If you put the micro SD card in your new one and install WhatsApp, your backup will be restored automatically during the installation.

If you don't have a micro SD card, there is also another way to restore your WhatsApp backup. Go to Settings > Chats and choose Chat backup to make a backup. Copy the folder whatsapp to your PC or Mac using a USB cable. All photos and videos are immediately copied. Take your new Android phone, plug it into your computer with the USB cable and copy the folder whatsapp to your smartphone. Then install WhatsApp and choose to restore the last conversation history.
