Thanks to Cloud Sync, you can sync Dropbox and other cloud services with your Synology NAS. This way you can easily back up your Dropbox or include it in the backup schedule of your NAS. You also have faster access on your home network and Dropbox does not have to be active on your computer.
Step 1: DSM
Cloud Sync is an app for DSM, Synology's operating system. In addition to Dropbox, Cloud Sync also lets you sync other popular cloud services such as OneDrive, Google Drive, Box, and more. Let's take Dropbox as an example. Also read: The 9 best free cloud services under the microscope.
Log in to DSM with your browser. With File Station, create a folder on your NAS in which you want to download your Dropbox, for example a default folder or a folder for all network users. Now go via the start button (top left in DSM) to Package Center. Install the Cloud Sync app and launch Cloud Sync from the DSM home button.
Step 2: Cloud Sync
The first time you start Cloud Sync, you can immediately set up your Dropbox sync with the button of the same name. You will be redirected to www.dropox.com to consent to this promotion. You then return to the Cloud Sync app for some additional settings. Choose at Local path the folder you created in the previous step. Bee external path you can specify a folder within your Dropbox. This is only useful if you only want to sync your most important Dropbox folders. With the option Data encryption files are encrypted in your Dropbox. This option is only for experts to use because the files in your Dropbox may become unreadable.
Step 3: Settings
The choice you make at Sync Direction is essential. By default, changes you make to the Dropbox folder of your NAS are updated to the cloud service, exactly the way you use Dropbox on your computer. This setting is called Bidirectional. You can choose to only backup your Dropbox to your NAS (instead of syncing). In this case, change the setting Sync Direction nasty Download external changes only. The option Upload only local changes works in reverse.
Your sync will be done automatically. In your Cloud Sync profile settings, you can specify how often this should happen, specify bandwidth restrictions, and edit other options.
