This is how you can clean up Facebook

Whether Facebook is good or bad for our social life, we dare not make a statement about that. We can say with certainty that you have more incentives on Facebook than you need. Often simply because we click and like something, but by no means delete everything. This is how you can clean up Facebook.

Tip 01: Unfriend

The first tip we give you is the hardest: it's time to unfriend people. Unless you're an exception to the rest of humanity, chances are you have quite a few friends on Facebook that you never actually talk to—in fact, some of them you might not even like. We somehow tend to maintain these contacts (because we've known them for so long), but be honest: do you want these people in your life? Go to Facebook, click on your profile name and then friends. Scroll through the list, click the button friends with someone you can honestly say you don't need on Facebook and then on Delete as friend. Don't worry, the person in question will not be notified of this. In fact, if he/she ever asks: “Why did you delete me?” you can answer just fine: “Because you only noticed after two years.”

Tip 02: Unfollow

Of course, there are also people you like quite a bit, but who sometimes post things you don't want on your timeline (for example, political opinions or pictures that are not suitable for youthful eyes while you often sit on the couch and Facebook with children). around you). Then unfriending may be a bit rigorous (especially when it comes to family), but then unfollowing is a great option. If you unfollow you will remain friends on Facebook, but you will simply no longer see the content of the person in question on your timeline. To do this, navigate to the person's page and click on the button Next. In the menu that expands, click on don't show again. The person in question will not receive any notification about this either.

View Friendship

We ask you to look at your friendships objectively to see if you still want to follow someone, but often we are not that objective in this area. Fortunately, Facebook maintains a painfully accurate archive of your online interactions on Facebook. Navigate to the profile of someone you are unsure about and click on the icon with the three dots (next to Chat message) and then on View Friendship. You can see at a glance everything that you have experienced together (online). For some people this page remains painfully empty. That can be a good indicator (unless this person is just not really active on Facebook).

Facebook has made changes so that you get fewer messages from Pages

Tip 03: Delete pages

Not too long ago, Facebook made a number of important changes that ensure that you get fewer messages from Pages for you. Nevertheless, pages can still reach you with advertisements, especially if you follow them. So it's time to keep track of the number of pages you follow. Fortunately, that can be done very easily. Go to Facebook and click on your profile name. Click on the button on your profile More and then Likes in the menu that expands. You will land on a page with a list of all the pages you like. Scroll through this list (you'll be surprised how long it is), and click I do not like it anymore to unfollow a page.

Tip 04: Delete groups

The algorithm change that Facebook has made mainly affects pages and much less to groups. This means that you will actually see more of groups, especially if you have reduced the number of friends (because there is now more space on your timeline). So it's high time to also get out of groups that you don't necessarily have to be in. You do this again via the menu More on your profile page, and this time you choose that Groups. Click on the pencil next to a group you no longer want to be in and then click on Groupleave.

Tip 05: Delete apps

Then perhaps the most insidious option: apps! Every time you take such a fun quiz on Facebook, see who your best friends are, what your true age is, and so on, you're giving an app permission to view your profile information. Those apps may not bother you on a regular basis, but they do know things about you and that is not necessary. To revoke access from apps, click the down arrow icon in the top right, then Institutions. Now in the left pane click apps. You now see all the apps that have access to your data, and there are often an alarming number of them! (Sometimes even more than the number of pages you like.) Click the cross next to an app to remove it. To get rid of all those annoying Candy Crush or FarmVille requests from your friends, click in the left pane To block and enter the name of the app in question next to the heading Block apps.

Want to get rid of all those annoying Candy Crush or FarmVille requests from your friends? Which can!

Tip 06: Delete photos

This tip gives you peace of mind in a different sense of the word. Back when Facebook wasn't so ubiquitous and privacy wasn't much of an issue, we were all posting. As a result, most people also have a lot of photos on Facebook, which are not so conducive to their social status. While we're cleaning up Facebook, we recommend that you click on your profile and then Photos and see which photos you could delete.

Tip 07: Advertisements

We've covered how to delete friends and Pages, but that doesn't mean you'll never get messages you don't want again. For example, it may very well be that you always see an advertisement that you do not need at all. Advertisements cannot be avoided, after all you pay nothing for Facebook, but it is important that advertisers tailor their messages in such a way that they do not bother anyone with them. If they don't do that right, you don't have to feel bad about deleting/hiding their posts. You do this by clicking on the three dots in the top right of the message and then on Hide ad. You can then indicate exactly why you do not want to see this advertisement. As a result, you will not receive fewer advertisements, but nicer messages that are better tailored to your wishes.

Tip 08: News overview

We have now mainly focused on all the things you don't want to see. But did you know that you also have a lot of control over everything you do want to see? You do this by adjusting the preferences of your News Feed. You can find that option in Facebook by clicking the arrow at the top right (next to the question mark) and then News Feed Preferences. When you click at the top Indicate who you want to see messages from first, you can specify exactly whose messages you never want to miss. Certainly with Facebook's new algorithm, that will provide a lot of improvement.

Properly adjusting the privacy settings can also give you a lot of peace of mind

Tip 09: Privacy Settings

You might not think so at first glance, but properly adjusting the privacy settings can also give you a lot of peace of mind. For example, by preventing just anyone from sending you a friend request. Navigate to the Settings menu and click Privacy. Under the heading Who can contact me You can specify who can send you friend requests. Then click on the left Timeline and tagging, then you can also prevent Jan and everyone from tagging you in photos and people from posting messages on your timeline. That makes it all a bit quieter.

Tip 10: Update profile

Now that we've cleaned up quite a bit on Facebook and pretty much minimized the amount of unwanted messages you get (you'll notice this immediately), it's time for the last step: updating your profile. After all, cleaning up goes hand in hand with a fresh start. The fastest way to do that is to click on your profile Update information. You can then edit your profile picture and cover photo. Then you can add another . in the top left of your profile intro about things that make you happy, things you like to eat and so on, and you can indicate where you went to school, what your job is and so on. These kinds of items are of course not mandatory, and you might not want to indicate where you work, but it is nice to see what new profile options have been added since you last updated Facebook.
