It has been almost five years since the streaming service Popcorn Time ceased to exist. Back then you could stream almost all movies and series for free. Popcorn Time was user-friendly and extremely popular, but above all very illegal. Yet Popcorn Time is now making a comeback.
While there are many illegal ways to watch movies for free that have just hit theaters or cannot be found on legal streaming services, Popcorn Time has always been hugely popular for its user-friendliness and streamlined interface. It is not for nothing that the streaming service is often called an illegal Netflix.
The coronavirus has left many people homebound and the developers of Popcorn Time want to take advantage of this moment to relaunch the streaming service. "Love in the times of Corona, version 0.4 is now out," reads the streaming service's Twitter account.
A new version has been rolled out in the past few days and Popcorn Time is working as usual. The app is still free to use and continues to encourage the use of VPN to prevent your illegal streaming practices from being discovered by your ISP.
Once again, the app features the latest movies and series, including Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Joker, Sonic the Hedgehog, as well as series like Westworld, Better Call Saul, Futurama, and hundreds of other shows.

So Popcorn Time is still as illegal as it was years ago. In addition, many new legal services have been added in recent years, such as Disney+, Amazon Prime Video and Videoland, as a result of which the range of films and series has grown enormously. And with that, the demand for a service like Popcorn Time has probably decreased somewhat.
However, if you still want to get started with the (beta version of the) streaming service, you can surf to popcorntime.app in your browser. Press the big button Download Popcorn Time 4.0 and the app will be downloaded immediately. The service is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android.
After downloading the file, you can go through the installation wizard to install the streaming service on your system. This will take a few minutes.
Then you start the app. On a Windows system, you'll probably get a message that Windows Defender Firewall has disabled some parts of the app. Then click Allow access to use Popcorn Time. Accept the terms of use within the streaming service and you have direct access to many films and series.
If you're sounding on a movie or series, you can adjust the picture quality and add subtitles where possible. It is also possible to set the audio language.
At own risk
At the top right of the app you can press the flashing red lock to create a VPN account. If you use such an illegal service, it is recommended to always use a VPN so that your IP address cannot be traced. If you download or distribute a lot of illegal content, there can be considerable penalties. The use of such illegal services is therefore entirely at your own risk.
