01 Chromecast Audio
To install multi-room audio in your home, you need at least two Chromecast Audio receivers. These cost a few tens each and you connect it to your speaker or amplifier. Note that a regular Chromecast or Chromecast Ultra is not suitable for multi-room audio, they are only useful for streaming video and audio to a television. If you don't know what Chromecast you have, take a look at the connection: a normal Chromecast has an HDMI connection, a Chromecast Audio has a mini-jack connection. Multiroom video with a normal Chromecast is unfortunately not yet possible.
02 Connect Chromecast
The Chromecast Audio has two connections. At the top you will find a stereo mini-jack port, at the bottom is a USB connection. Use the supplied yellow audio cable to connect the Chromecast Audio to the AUX input of your speaker. You connect the USB plug to the socket. Unfortunately, the audio cable is very short so it can prevent your Chromecast Audio from hanging on the side of your speaker.
03 Install App
On your Android smartphone or tablet, go here and tap Find out on Google Play to install the Google Home app. You will then be taken to the Play Store. click on to install and then To open to set up your Chromecast. If you access the website from an iPhone or iPad, tap the App Store logo and install the Google Home app on your Apple device.
04 Connect to Chromecast
Tap on Accept to accept the terms of service. After signing in to your Wi-Fi network, the app will automatically find your connected Chromecast Audio and display it under a temporary name. Tap on Get on. At this point, your Wi-Fi network will be disconnected for a while and your smartphone or tablet will temporarily log into the Chromecast Audio's Wi-Fi hotspot. This may take a few minutes.
Connection issues
The app may not be able to connect to your Chromecast Audio right away. If you haven't connected after three minutes, tap the Back button and abort the setup. Stand next to the Chromecast Audio and relaunch the app. In most cases this solves the problem. If you are still experiencing problems, go here.
05 Play sound
If the app was able to connect to the Chromecast Audio, you will see a message asking you to play a sound through the Chromecast Audio. Make sure your speaker or amplifier is set to the correct input and that the volume is turned up. Tap on Play test sound and the sound will play over your speaker. On the next screen, tap I've heard it to confirm the action.
06 Set name
On the next page, enter the name of the Chromecast Audio. Since the Chromecast hangs on a specific speaker or amplifier, it is useful to indicate the location of the speaker, for example kitchen or Speakers in the bedroom. The checkmark for Send Google Cast device usage data and crash reports to Google you can disable it if you want. Tap on Get on.
Enable guest mode
Leave the check mark Enable guest mode if you want people to be able to stream music to your Chromecast Audio without having your Wi-Fi password. This is great for parties, for example. The function is possible because the app and the Chromecast communicate with each other via a high-pitched tone that is inaudible to humans. Unfortunately, this tone cannot penetrate walls and windows, so only people who are in the same room as the Chromecast can send music to your Chromecast Audio. The connection is also secured with an automatic PIN code, which expires after 24 hours. Please note that guest mode is currently only available in the Android version of Google Home.
