Set default apps in Android

When you open a file on your Android smartphone, the corresponding app will open automatically. That's handy, but what if you want to do that with another app? Just like in, say, Windows, you can just adjust this in Android. We explain how.

Although setting default apps for certain actions is possible, it is somewhat cumbersome. Android wouldn't be Android if there were an app that improves on this basic functionality (called Default App Manager), but it's obviously preferable to do it with the capabilities that Android itself offers.

In this example, let's take a business card. Suppose you get a digital business card from someone, and when you press it, the Contacts app automatically opens. Nice, but maybe you installed a much better app for that and you don't want Contacts to start at all.

It's a bit cumbersome, but you can customize the default apps in Android.

In that case, navigate to Institutions and then to Application management (on the Galaxy S4 this option is hidden under the heading More). At the top you see the header downloaded, scroll to the side until you see the header Everything sees. Now scroll down until you find the app Contacts (or another app if you're not specifically following this example) and press it. The properties of the app will now open.

Scroll down until you see the heading Start Default sees. There's a button Clear default settings. When you press this, the link between the app and the file type is removed. When you open a file of this type again, you can choose with which app you want to open this file type from now on.
