Sharing bills with Splitwise

If you go on holiday with a group of people or share an apartment, it is not always easy to split the bill afterwards. Unless you use Splitwise. With that smart app you can share bills.

Step 1: Register

It is most convenient if all friends or family members use Splitwise, but that is not a must. Install the app (iOS and Android) on your smartphone and then create a free account by clicking Register to tap. Enter your name and e-mail address and then continue with Add friends to Splitwise. Enter a phone number or email address to send the invitation via SMS or email. Repeat this for all your friends or family members you want to share accounts with.

Step 2: Create group

Then tap the button at the very bottom Groups and then Start a group. Then you have to give the group a name, for example Vacation Porto. At the bottom you can choose a group theme: Apartment, House, Ride or Others. Confirm your choice with Finished. Through Add members add your existing Splitwise users to your group. Friends or family who haven't installed the app (or don't plan to) can still keep track of all expenses by tapping the Share a link button.

Step 3: Enter Expenses

As soon as an expense follows – for example a dinner at a restaurant – open the app and tap the large plus button at the bottom. Choose a group, enter a description and then enter the amount. Didn't you pay for the expense yourself? Then click Paid by you and divide equally and choose another option from the list. If desired, you can take a photo of the receipt or add comments by tapping the camera or note button. Continue with Save. You immediately get an overview of who owes which amount. Did someone pay you back? Then tap Settle debt. Through More do you also get the option Send a reminder. To get an overview of all costs in a group, tap the Activity-knob. At the end of the month, all group members will receive an overview of their expenses and debts in their mailbox.
