Block spam in Gmail on your Android device

It is likely that you receive unwanted emails on a regular basis. Fortunately, with the Gmail app on your Android smartphone or tablet, there's a lot you can do to block such emails. In this article, we'll show you the easiest way to do that.

Mark messages as spam

Gmail already has an automatic spam filter, but it can happen that something slips through the net. In that case, you can indicate this by following the steps below. Also read: 3 super tips for Gmail.

Open the gmailapp and navigate to the spam message. Press the red menu with the white background and then press Report spam.

Google will use this information to improve its spam filter so that such e-mails can be identified as spam more quickly.

Block specific senders

If you keep receiving unwanted messages from the same email address, you can block this sender. You will no longer receive emails from this address.

Open the gmailapp and navigate to an email from the sender you want to block. Open the email in question and click on the gray menu in the top right corner. Then press Block [Name].

To unblock so this sender can email you again, repeat the steps above.

In order to see which senders you have blocked, you will need to use a computer. On your computer, go to Gmail and click the gear icon. Go to Settings > Filters and blocked addresses and scroll all the way down.

Block mailing lists

If you've signed up for a mailing list or bought something from somewhere, you may continue to receive emails that you'd rather not have. It's not spam because you gave it permission at the time, but you want to get rid of it.

In that case, you can unsubscribe by pressing the gmailapp and navigate to such an email. Open the mail, press the white menu and choose Sign out.

Report Phishing

If you receive a suspicious email asking for login details, bank details or similar, you can report it. Unfortunately, this is currently only possible from the computer.

Open gmail on the computer and open the suspicious email. Make sure you don't click any links or open attachments. In the top right corner of the message, click the down arrow next to the button To answer. Then click Report Phishing.

Google will use this information to better identify such messages as phishing emails.
