Did you know that you can also get started with Google Docs without an internet connection? Handy, for example if you regularly use Google Docs on your laptop and do not always have an internet connection.
01 Chrome and Google Drive
Via a browser extension for Google Chrome you can store Google documents locally in your Google Drive, so that you can also access them offline. Once your system reconnects, the files will be synced. Not just the plain text documents in your Google Drive, but the entire content: documents, presentations, spreadsheets, forms and drawings, including the associated folder structure.
Google Docs only works offline with the Chrome browser (or in Chrome OS). You can download Crone here. After installation you will need the Google Docs web app, install it by going to //ct.link.ctw.nl/cgd with Chrome and click on Login and add to push. Sign in with your Google account and the extension will be installed.
First, install the Google Docs web app in your Chrome browser.
02 Local Offline
Now let's sync your Google docs offline with the PC. You do this by navigating to //drive.google.com with Chrome, in the left menu on More pressing and Offline. In the middle part now appears the item Run tasks offline. If all is well, there will be a check mark next to the item You now have the web app because we performed it in the first step.
Press Enable offline. Now your browser will start synchronizing the documents. This may take a while, depending on the number of documents in your Google Drive. The progress of the synchronization is displayed at the top of the window.
Your browser stores your Google docs locally.
03 Get started offline
You can now get started with Google Docs whether you are online or not. Just fire up Chrome and navigate to https://drive.google.com. You will notice that this page is just loading when you are offline. It is not only possible to update existing files, but it is also possible to create new documents.
You can apply this trick to multiple systems with one Google account. Multiple accounts on one system is not possible. However, be sure to sync your recent changes every time you come online.
Google Docs Offline works not only on Chrome browser but also on Chrome OS.
