avast! Free Antivirus 2015 protects against viruses, spyware and other malware. During the installation you can already add two plugins for extra security. The first scans the home network for vulnerabilities and, for example, sounds the alarm when a PC in the home network can be accessed from the internet. It also checks the security of, for example, the router in a basic way. The second plug-in focuses on the browser extensions and toolbars. It helps to remove them and checks the reputation of these extensions that are often installed on the PC unnoticed. What Free Antivirus Doesn't Offer and Avast!'s Paid Products however, it does include extra secure internet banking, protection against hijacking, an Avast firewall, antispam, an automatic vulnerability scanner and protecting your personal data. Pay close attention during the installation, otherwise you will not install the free Free Antivirus but a thirty-day version of the paid Avast Internet Security. To Avast! To use Free Antivirus for a longer period of time, registration is required, you will then receive a license for one year.

Windows

avast! Free Antivirus mainly runs in the background and scans files that are opened or downloaded including the mail messages. A USB memory stick or external drive is not automatically scanned, but you can easily start the scan from Windows Explorer or by choosing one of the five default scan profiles in Avast. Other profiles include a quick scan, a full system scan, a startup scan, and a scan of one or more folders of your choosing. For offline scanning, you can create a recovery media on USB or CD. The vulnerability scanner checks whether Windows and the programs you have installed have the latest security updates. It is similar to PSI Secunia or Ninite Pro. Updating outdated or no longer secure software must then be started manually, only in the paid Avast products that is done automatically.

Conclusion

Free Antivirus 2015 from Avast! is a nice antivirus to let you protect your PC for free. The interface is uncluttered, the pressure to upgrade to a paid version is limited and with the home network scan and browser protection it offers nice extras.
