How to back up your iPhone or iPad

It is a good idea to make regular backups of your Apple devices. Apple calls a backup a "backup" and there are two ways to create such a copy. We'll show you how to back up via iCloud or via iTunes.

Backing up is a good idea because it may happen that your Apple device needs to be restored to factory settings, or that you switch to a new device. In either case, the files, settings, and apps from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch are gone. By making a backup of your device, you can restore it in one go so that you don't have to do it all yourself. The condition is that you have also made a backup copy of your device, but how does that work? Also read: Help: My backup is not being made, what now?

Backup via iCloud

The easiest way to back up is via iCloud. All you need is a good WiFi connection and enough storage space in the cloud. If you have, you can make a backup by going to Institutions >iCloud >Backup to go.

If you have a device with iOS 7 or lower, go to Institutions >iCloud >Storage and backup. In either case, you can tap Back up now. Through the slider at the top next to iCloud backup green, your device automatically backs up when it's charging, connected to a Wi-Fi network, and locked.

Backup via iTunes

You can also make a backup via iTunes. Then you must have a PC with internet and iTunes installed. If you have connected your device to your PC and have started iTunes, you will see an icon of your device appear at the top when the connection has been made. If you click on that icon, you will get an overview of the device. Underneath the head Backups you will find all options to make a backup. On the right you can manually make a backup by clicking Make backup to click. That copy is saved on your PC.

On the left you see Make backups automatically. Below you can choose iCloud and This computer. If you choose 'This computer', the backup will be saved on your computer when your device is connected to the PC. If you choose iCloud, the copy will be stored in the cloud.

Enough storage space

In both cases it is necessary to have enough storage space available. Especially on iCloud, you may not have enough space. In that case, you can buy more storage space by clicking below: Institutions >iCloud on Storage tapping and then Buy more storage. By default, you have 5GB of storage space without having to pay anything for it. The storage space can be expanded to 20GB, 200GB, 500GB or 1TB. This will cost you a monthly amount of at least 0.99 euros to a maximum of 19.99 euros.
