Affinity Photo

If you are willing to pay something for your editing program, choose Affinity Photo. The program can be downloaded from the website for fifty euros and feels like a complete and intelligent Mac program.

The great thing is that Affinity Photo can just open PSD files, so you can continue working on projects you've created with Photoshop. The amount of options is huge and it's actually weird that the program is so cheap, Affinity Photo really feels like a mature competitor to Photoshop.

Pixelmator (Mac only)

Pixelmator was always the best alternative to Photoshop because it was much cheaper. But since the arrival of Affinity Photo, the price of thirty euros seems a bit steep. Just like Affinity Photo, the program can read PSD files and is slightly easier to use than Affinity Photo. However, it is only available for the Mac.

The program is also available for iOS for 4.99 euros. You can then reopen projects you created with the iOS version in the Mac version. Pixelmator also looks very good and works smoothly. If you're looking for a cheap alternative and don't need all the features of Affinity Photo, choose Pixelmator.

Sketch (Mac only)

Where Affinity Photo and Pixelmator are really aimed as a replacement for Photoshop, the Dutch Sketch is a replacement for Illustrator. The program mainly focuses on creating icons, websites and interfaces.

Not only vector files can be made with Sketch, the program can also import photos and you can apply simple edits. Of course, you can export a complete website design as separate parts at the touch of a button. With the free Sketch Mirror app, you can also immediately test the design of your created website or app on an iPhone or iPad. For Android, there is the Crystal app that does the same.
