These are the new features of iOS 13.5

Apple has released iOS 13.5. With the update for the operating system, the company is responding to some problems that users are experiencing in the current corona crisis. We discuss the latest functions.

iOS 13.5 is in many ways a kind of corona update and should make your iPhone considerably more user-friendly if you wear a face mask. Users reported in large numbers that Face ID does not work well with a mask on.

Apple has found a solution for this for the latest version of the operating system, although unfortunately it is still not possible to use Face ID if you wear a face mask. However, you will now see the screen faster to enter your access code, so that you can immediately unlock your phone.

Quick unlock

Prior to iOS 13.5, it could take you a long time to get the unlock screen as the iPhone kept scanning your face to unlock your phone. Only after a few attempts, you were given the opportunity to enter your access code. Now you can directly enter your code.

Although you cannot unlock your phone via Face ID with a mouth cap on, the iPhone does recognize that you have one on. The advantage of this is that you do not have to turn Face ID on or off every time you wear a mask, but the iPhone recognizes itself whether it is necessary to enter your passcode or not. This can save you a lot of frustration if you are in the store and want to quickly unlock your device to pay with Apple Pay, for example.

Corona apps

Recently, Apple has been working with Google to support corona apps that need your location. With iOS 13.5, support is baked in. In the Netherlands there are no apps that use this technology yet, but because smartphones now facilitate the technology, this can help governments and health institutions to roll out tracking apps more quickly. These apps should make it easier to warn phone users if they have come into contact with people who have tested positive for the corona virus. Apple and Google have already indicated that they only want to use the technology for the current pandemic.

iOS 13.5 is now available for download, but please note: Apple has indicated that after the update it is not possible to restore your iPhone to the previous version, iOS 13.4.1. Apple wants as many users as possible to have the most recent software.
