How to add a clock in PowerPoint

Have you planned something in your PowerPoint presentation where time is important? For example, if you have to take a break at a certain time or if you have agreed to start a Skype connection at 10 am. Then you don't want to constantly have to look at the clock. We'll show you two ways to add a clock to your presentation.

Step 1: Date and time

There are a number of ways to add a timestamp to a presentation. The first way is by going to the tab Insert to navigate. In the group Text click on the part Header and Footer. Then you put a check in Date and time and choose you Auto update. Select a way to display the time. If you do not want the time to appear on the first slide, activate the option Do not show on title slide. Then click the button Apply everywhere. The date and time that appears is the system's. When you click on this time slot, you can adjust the font, font size, style and position. There is a major disadvantage to this way of displaying the time in your presentation, because you only see the time advance when you switch slides.

Step 2: Flash Clock

The second way uses a Flash based clock. Flash is an animation technique that has fallen into disrepute in recent years. We found a hundred different clocks on www.matsclock.com. Choose a clock of your choice and with a bit of luck there will be a PowerPoint template in the zip file that already contains the clock. In such a case, you can simply copy and paste that clock into your own presentation.

Step 3: Movie

If there is no PowerPoint template but a simple swf file in the download file from Matsclock, go in PowerPoint via File nasty Options and choose Customize ribbon. Put a check in the tab Developers to enable it. In the tab Developers then click the button with the screwdriver and wrench. Scroll in this window until you see Shockwave Flash Object can select and click OK. Drag the mouse pointer on the slide to form a frame that roughly fits the clock. Then right click on this frame and open the command Properties window. Here you see a list containing the word movie. Paste the path to the clock's swf file in the right box next to this word. You may then of course not change the location of the swf file, because then the clock will no longer work.
