'Marie Kondo' on your smartphone: everything cleaned up

Thanks to Netflix, everyone got to know the Japanese cleaning guru Marie Kondo. In Tidying Up With Marie Kondo, she helps hopeless slobs to bring order back to their homes based on her own Konmari method. This method turns out not only to be good for cleaning up your house, but also for sweeping through your smartphone and social media accounts.

The Konmari method consists of two steps, namely throwing things away or putting them away. The question you then ask yourself is: Does it spark joy? In other words: does this make you feel happy? If so, you can keep it, if not, throw it away.

Unfortunately, what isn't discussed in Tidying Up is how to keep your smartphone tidy. Many smartphone users will encounter this, especially those with limited storage space at their disposal. A missed opportunity, because the Konmari method is best used to clean up your phone, but also your social media accounts.

This Japanese consultant takes it very literally, but if you look at the bigger picture, there are some useful ideas to clean things up. We list some tips.

Clean up apps

An open door, but everything starts with cleaning your apps. There will no doubt be applications that you downloaded years ago but don't actually use anymore. You can put these apps in the cloud or just throw them away altogether. Use the Konmari method: does this app make you happy? The answer determines whether you should delete or keep the application.

The same goes for your social media accounts. You don't have to follow everyone. For example, there are several ways to follow friends on Facebook, so take advantage of that. That can give you a lot of peace of mind. Stop following that vague acquaintance who sent you a friend request ten years ago, but haven't seen or spoken to in all those years. According to Kondo, a good question to ask yourself is: why am I following these people?

Clean up everything at once

If you want to clean up all your social media accounts in one go, it pays to go to www.deseat.me first. On this website you can see which accounts are connected to your email address. When Deseat.me has scanned your mails, it will show a list of services you have signed up for with this mail account. You can easily decide what you want to do for each service: keep it or unsubscribe?

Fixed place

The Konmari method also stands for giving everything a permanent place. For your phone, this means sorting and organizing apps. Developers spend a lot of time developing a recognizable and clear logo for their app. It can therefore not be a bad idea to sort your apps by color. In this article, we already discussed other ways to give apps a place, so that you never have to search for a certain application for a long time.

So see which apps you want to keep by asking yourself whether you still enjoy them and clean up your friends list in your own way. Then make sure you have your apps in a fixed place and you get a tidier home screen in return. Thanks to the Konmari method.
