Microsoft released Windows 8.1 as an update for existing Windows 8 users on Thursday. But how do you actually download this major update? We explain it to you step by step.
Upgrade from Windows 8
Microsoft uses the Windows Store to roll out its new operating system. If you already use Windows 8, you are undoubtedly familiar with this online store for apps and software. Make sure you have at least 3 GB of free disk space, otherwise the new OS cannot be installed.
Note: Although the update will probably install without any problems and all your settings, files and software will remain unchanged, it is always a good idea to make a backup. In addition, it is recommended to check whether all drivers are up-to-date.
Downloading Windows 8.1 is very easy for current Windows 8 users. Make sure you are signed in with your Microsoft account and Open then the Windows Store. When you enter the digital store, you will immediately see a large Windows 8.1 tile on the Start screen. Click here, and confirm that the file can be downloaded. When the update is complete, a message will appear that the PC will reboot several times. Now you just have to be patient, and then you can get started with the new Windows 8.1.
Can't see the tile? You probably haven't installed the latest updates for Windows 8 yet. So go to Settings > Change PC settings > Windows Update. Here you can instruct to search for and install new updates. Done? Great, then you can return to the Store and download Windows 8.1.

Have you left Windows 8 behind, but now you still want to get started with Windows 8.1? Then you can upgrade your system via the Upgrade Assistant from Microsoft. However, the operating system is not free. The Pro version of Windows 8.1 can be purchased for 280 euros. For the normal version of Windows 8, 120 euros will have to be paid.
