6 affordable color laser printers tested

Are you looking for a printer but don't need all the extra functionality of an all-in-one? Then a normal color laser printer is a good option. In this article we look at some entry-level color laser printers.

1 Brother HL-3140CW

Strictly speaking, the HL-3140CW is not a color laser printer, as we are dealing with an LED printer here. This means that instead of a laser, a row of LEDs is used to 'draw' the image to be printed on the imaging drum before applying the toner and then applying it to the paper. For the rest, such a printer functions identically to a laser printer.

The Brother HL-3140CW's control panel looks quite spartan, but that makes sense for a device that can only print. We would have liked it to be a bit clearer how to navigate through the menu. Brother is serious about Wi-Fi Direct, which makes it possible to print from a mobile device without going through a router. The printer does not have a wired network connection.

One of the advantages of LED over laser should be that thanks to the presence of a whole battery of LEDs, a higher resolution should be achievable and therefore also better color prints. That does not seem to be the case with the HL-3140CW. The colors are rather faded, something we often see with Brother LED printers. Text is – as we are used to with this type of printers – printed sharp and deep black.
