Connect iPad to TV via AirPlay or adapter

Certain multimedia simply deserves a larger screen than your iPad has to offer. In this article we will discuss how to connect an iPad to a TV. This can be done wirelessly via AirPlay or via a cable.

Some modern smart TVs support AirPlay, such as recent models from Samsung, LG, and Sony. Favorable, because thanks to this technology you can wirelessly connect an iPad (or iPhone) to the smart picture tube. The condition is that the television and tablet are registered on the same home network. Check further in the specifications whether the smart TV accepts AirPlay.

On the Apple device, open the app Photos and find a nice photo or video. Now tap the share icon (square with arrow) at the bottom. Then swipe down a bit until you see the AirPlay option. Tap that and choose the name of the smart TV. A pairing code appears on the television.

After you have entered the four digits, the photo will appear in full regalia on the big screen. The mobile device now acts as a remote control. Swipe left or right to go to the next or previous photo.

Do you want to disconnect? Tap the AirPlay logo at the top right (rectangle with triangle) and enter via My Device indicate that you only want to display the photo on the mobile device. In addition to the Photos app, there are other applications with AirPlay support, not least music streaming services such as Apple Music.

In addition to streaming photos and videos, AirPlay can also synchronize the screen of your iPad on a suitable television. Handy, because that way you can really use any app on a large scale. First, open the control panel. Depending on which Apple device you're using, swipe up from the bottom of the screen or down from the top right corner.

Tap on Synchronous Playback and select the name of your smart TV. When you connect the television to AirPlay for the first time, a pairing request appears. Copy these four digits to the mobile device. The contents of your Apple device will now appear on the television. Note that after tilting the mobile device, the display on the smart TV moves with it.

You end the connection by tapping the logo for synchronous display in the control panel (two rectangles), after which you confirm with the HDMI adapter for the iPad.

HDMI adapter for iPad

Although more and more smart TVs are equipped with AirPlay, this is of course not the case for every television. Fortunately, you can also connect an iPad with a cord. For most iPads you need the so-called lightning-to-digital AV adapter from Apple and an HDMI cable. This adapter has a lightning connection for the iPad and an HDMI output for the television.

The maximum resolution on the television is 1920 × 1080 pixels. Conveniently, the adapter has an extra lightning connection, so you can charge the mobile device at the same time. The adapter in question costs 55 euros via Apple's own web store.

Certain (recent) models have a USB-c port instead of a lightning connection. In that case you need the so-called usb-c-to-digital-AV multiport adapter. It costs 79 euros at Apple. Quite pricey, so luckily there are also cheaper HDMI adapters from alternative brands for the iPad.
