15 essential programs for your PC

There are countless programs that can do the same, often with unnecessarily complex settings. Programs suitable for one specific task are few and far between. In this article, we'll discuss 15 of these must-have programs.

Tip 01: Find files

Windows has a built-in search function to find files, but it pales in comparison to Everything. Everything cannot search files, but specializes in finding files by name. The program works on all local hard drives with NTFS format. Most Windows computers use this. It is not necessary to type the full file name, part of it will suffice. Suppose you are looking for the file diary holiday France 2013.docx. With Everything, the search is dayb fr 13 (or even less characters) enough to bring the file above water. Click on the file to open it in the associated program.

Tip 01 Everything will find the file you are looking for in seconds.

Tip 02: Find text in files

If you want to open a file, but don't remember what the file is called and/or where it was saved, TextCrawler offers a solution. TextCrawler finds the file quickly if you know anything about what's in the file. The program is advanced, but the basics are simple.

Add (if you know) File filter the type of file, for example *.docx for a Word file or *.xlsx for an Excel file. Type at find a small piece of text that you know for sure exists in the file. Do you know the folder where the file is located? Then indicate this at Start location. If you don't know the map, you can find it here C:\ to have your entire C drive searched. click on find to make TextCrawler work. The results appear at the bottom of the screen.

Tip 02 Have you forgotten the file name, but do you know something else about the file? TextCrawler finds your file!

Tip 03: Paste plain text

There are those programs that you don't need every day, but it's nice to have them! PureText is indispensable for those who maintain their own website, regularly place advertisements on Marktplaats, for example, or want to copy texts from the Internet to a Word document. With the key combination Ctrl+V (paste) you not only paste the text, but also the formatting. PureText gives your computer an extra key combination, namely Windows key + V. With this you only paste the plain text, so without formatting.

Tip 03 PureText pastes only the plain text with Windows key + V.

Tip 04: Quick Note

To make a note, you can use loose paper, work with Windows Notepad or use an advanced solution such as OneNote. Simple Sticky Notes is a good middle ground and offers the familiar 'yellow notes' on your desktop. It is similar to the Sticky Notes program that comes standard with Windows from Windows 7. In Simple Sticky Notes, however, it is also possible to use other fonts and colors or to attach an alarm to a note if you really should not forget something. With Simple Sticky Notes you can easily make a shopping list or just a quick note of a phone call. Be careful during installation to avoid unwanted software or other changes.

Tip 05: Adjust photo resolution

Any photo editing program can do it: adjust the resolution of photo files. This makes a photo smaller and therefore more suitable for use on websites, social media or in an email. Unfortunately, this is quite a lot of operations, but fortunately the process can be simplified with Image Resizer for Windows.

Image Resizer for Windows integrates into your right-click menu. Open a folder of photos in Windows Explorer. Right-click on an image or select multiple images. Choose Resize pictures and then a new size for the photo(s), for example Medium or Large. Place a checkmark Replace pictures if you want to overwrite the original images. Without this checkmark, Image Resizer for Windows makes copies with the reduced image(s), just as safe!
