Twitter is a great way to communicate. However, there are also a few drawbacks to the social network. For example, the fact that anyone can suddenly send you messages! How do you prevent this DM spam?
For a long time it was a golden rule on Twitter: only people you follow can send you a personal message (direct message, DM). Some time ago, Twitter made a change to that policy. Now anyone who wants to can send you a message. Also read: This is how you ignore people on Twitter.
Why Twitter made that decision at the time is still a mystery to us, because it really only encourages spam messages. Fortunately, you can easily restore the situation to how it once was.
Disable Mass DM
Log in to your Twitter page and click your . in the top right profile picture and then Institutions in the menu that expands. Then click on the tab Security and Privacy in the left pane and scroll all the way down until you see the option private messages sees.
There you remove the check Receive private messages from everyone. You can now of course still receive private messages, but - just like before - only from the people you actually follow. That makes Twitter a lot more pleasant to use.
