Set Sonos as the default speaker for Google Home

It has recently become possible to set a Sonos speaker as the default speaker for Google Home, Google Nest Mini and the Google Nest Hub. As good as Google's speakers may be, they can't reproduce really good quality music. So if you have both a Google Home or Nest speaker at home and you want it to play the music through your Sonos speakers from now on, read on.

It has been possible for a while to set another speaker as the default speaker for your Google Home or Nest speakers in the house. Until now, it was not possible to use Sonos speakers for this, but that has recently changed. It is still a matter of looking and trying out which speakers can or cannot be installed, but you can at least use the Sonos Play:5, Sonos One, Sonos Beam and Sonos Move.

Set up Sonos speaker via Google Home

Fortunately, the pairing process is pretty simple. You need for this: the Google Home app, a Home or Nest speaker and of course a speaker from Sonos. In the Google Home app, you go to the smart speaker that you want from now on to play its music via a Sonos product. At the top right you will see a gear icon. If you click on that, you can scroll down in the next screen until you see the Default music speaker heading. When you tap on that again, you will see a list of available speakers. Make sure the Sonos is already turned on at that point.

Once the speaker is powered on and in search mode, pairing can begin. If everything goes well, you should now see the Sonos in the list of available speakers. You can tap on the speaker to complete the pairing. The Google Assistant notifies you when everything has gone well, so be aware of that. Did you hear the confirmation? Good! Then make sure that the Sonos speaker in question is always on when you want to play music and you give the command to your Google Home or Nest speaker to play music.

The great thing about this integration is that Ikea's Symfonisk speakers can also be selected in the same way as a music speaker. That is because Ikea has worked on the speakers together with Sonos and therefore share the basic technology.
