Thunderbird 60.0 - Email Client Cleanup

You probably know Mozilla mainly from browser Firefox. Especially now that it has been significantly improved with the Quantum update and has become much faster, it is time to take a look at the other products from the software maker. Such as Thunderbird mail program, which has finally received a good lick of paint.

Thunderbird is one of the most powerful free mail programs, and we've been fans of it for a long time. But let's be honest: especially since Firefox has had the Quantum update, Thunderbird feels a bit old-fashioned. The mail program has now almost reached version 60, and that finally means the necessary lick of paint and a host of new features.

Thunderbird 60.0 has been available as a beta for loyal fans for a while, but now all users can upgrade to the new program for free. Please note that your existing Thunderbird must be at least version 52 or higher, otherwise you will have to do a version installation.

The first thing you notice about the new Thunderbird is the exterior changes. These are in line with the UI of Firefox Quantum. Things such as menus look more blocky in Thunderbird 60, and together with a standard light or dark theme, this immediately provides a more modern look. Even the logo has changed, nice for the purists among us. Fortunately, the changes are not only aesthetic, but also practical. In particular, the attachment button has been improved. It is now in a more logical place (at the top of the attachments panel) and can be called up with a hotkey.

agenda

Mozilla has also paid a lot of attention to the agenda in Thunderbird 60, which has always been a bit of the neglected child of the mail client. In the new version it is possible to copy and paste recurring events, and to add locations.

Unfortunately, a major update like this also has drawbacks. As with Firefox's Quantum update, many add-ons and themes no longer work properly in Thunderbird 60. Whether they ever work properly again depends on the developers of the add-ons – and that is unfortunately still a problem with Quantum months after release.

Conclusion

Mozilla has finally given the Thunderbird email client the update it deserved. The program has not only been given a much more modern look, but also some useful new features that make it an even more useful program for the serious users. Only some old extensions and themes no longer work.
