WiFi in the attic within ten minutes

Whatever router you have, there will always be a room in your house where you don't have good wireless coverage. This while WiFi is becoming increasingly important in everyday life. Thanks to devolo, you can also have a perfect wireless network in your attic within ten minutes. We show you how that works.

At home, it is usually difficult to run network cables to, for example, your attic without renovating your entire house. Placing (expensive) WiFi access points is therefore usually not feasible. WiFi repeaters seem like a simple solution, but in practice it turns out not to be that simple. Repeaters are difficult to place because you don't connect them where you have problems, but in a place where you still have good coverage - and finding that place can be difficult. Moreover, thanks to the 'amplification', a repeater ensures a much slower wireless network.

Network through electrical wires

What is a good solution to get a wireless network everywhere in the house? For that we have to go back to cables. Unnoticed, your house is already equipped with a network with a connection in all rooms: your electricity wires and sockets. Devolo uses that network to transport data to all places in your house and convert it to WiFi. With the new dLAN 550+ WiFi Starter Kit Powerline, devolo makes it easier than ever for you. This set uses devolo's extremely stable range+ with which data is transported over the electricity wires at a speed of 500 Mbit/s. The WiFi adapter contains a lightning-fast WiFi access point with a maximum speed of 300 Mbit/s.

How-to: Connecting devolo dLAN 550+ Wifi Starter Kit

1. Connect to your router

We start by connecting the first adapter near the router. This is the adapter without buttons on the front. You need a free socket, but fortunately devolo has thought of that. The adapter has a built-in socket to which you can connect other devices or even a power strip without causing any interference. Then connect the supplied network cable to the right network connection of the adapter and plug the other side into your router.

2. Connect WiFi adapter

We don't have wireless coverage in the attic at home, something we would like. Of course we do have a socket in the attic: a great place for the devolo dLAN 550+ WiFi adapter. On the back of the adapter you will find a WiFi key: this is the security key for the wireless network. Plug in the adapter and wait for the house to change from red to white. The powerline adapters have then made contact with each other. Just like the normal adapter, the WiFi adapter has a network connection. You can connect your PC or network printer to this, for example. With this set from devolo you get both WiFi and a wired network connection.

3. Securing Powerline Adapter

The powerline adapters automatically contact each other after installation because they have the same powerline security key from the factory. It is more secure if the adapters within your network work with a unique security key. On the WiFi adapter you see a button with a house, while on the other adapter you see a button on the side. Press the button with the house and then press the button on the other adapter within two minutes. The adapters will now exchange a unique security key.

4. Configure WiFi connection

Grab your smartphone, tablet or laptop and look for a WiFi network called devolo-xxx. Connect and enter the password you wrote down earlier (the Wifi key). Your device is already connected to Wi-Fi and the Internet. Only the name of the network is different from your normal network.

5. Configure WiFi Clone

With WiFi Clone you can copy the data from the normal wireless network to the devolo adapter. This way you get one WiFi network and you can walk around the house without having to reconnect.

Unplug the WiFi adapter from the wall socket and plug it into an electrical outlet no more than ten meters from your router. Wait until the lights turn white and press the button with the house. Then press the WPS button on your router. Wait for all the lights to stop flashing, then plug the adapter back in where you want it to be. There you now have exactly the same wireless network as on your normal router. If your router does not have a WPS button or if cloning is not successful, you can manually change the name of the wireless network to your own network using the devolo Cockpit Software.

Expand further

You can expand the devolo dLAN 550+ WiFi Starter Kit with more WiFi adapters; in this way you can also realize a perfect wireless network in, for example, your bedroom or garage. The data signal is already on all your sockets, so you only need one WiFi adapter to further expand your wireless network. Thanks to devolo, you can set up an excellent WiFi network anywhere in your home within ten minutes. A separate devolo dLAN 550+ WiFi Powerline adapter costs 89.99 euros.

Devolo Cockpit Software

A unique addition to devolo's powerline adapters is the Cockpit Software. This allows you to easily manage your powerline adapters. For example, you can immediately see whether the adapters are properly connected to each other and what the mutual link speed is. Cockpit is also the place to check for updates to the powerline adapters. In combination with the devolo dLAN 550+ WiFi Starter Kit, you can also access the configuration page of the WiFi access point. Here you can set up the wireless network, set up a guest network and set a parental lock. Devolo Cockpit is available for Windows, OS X and Linux.
